In Breiðuvík by Borgarfjörður in Múlasýsla lived a man named Bjarni, who was called Bjarni the Strong. One summer it happened that Bjarni was out in the homefield in thick weather and fog. He then hears the movement of livestock out towards the sea below the farmhouse. He begins to look out into the fog; he sees then that a herd of cattle is moving there, and no fewer than 18, and a small boy runs after them, and following there went a calf.
Bjarni runs off and intercepts the cattle, for he thought he knew that these would be sea-cattle. But when the boy sees that, he begins to urge the cattle to run. Bjarni sees that an ox goes first, and there are rings on his horns, and they jingled when he began to run. They ran then, each racing the other, Bjarni and the boy, until they came to the tidemark. Bjarni had then come between the calf and the cattle, and the boy went with the herd of cattle into the sea, but Bjarni turned towards the calf, and struck the front of its nostrils so the bladder burst—which is said to be between the nostrils of sea-cattle—and it could not then get into the sea, and Bjarni led it home to his place. This had been a heifer, and became a twenty-mark cow, and from her came the best breed of cows in Breiðuvík for a long time down through the ages.
The lake which is in Haukadalur vestra is very deep, and men believe that it has an underground passage to the sea. Men think they often hear rumblings in the lake, and often ice breaks off it in frost. Once in ancient times, it is said that the farmer at Vatnshorn had come into his cowshed before daybreak at the end of summer. He let it stand open, in case cows might come home. But when he came into the cowshed, it was full of 18 cows, sea-gray. They were exactly like other cows, except that there was a bladder on their nostrils. The cows rushed out, but the farmer grabbed a club, and he managed to burst the bladder on 9 cows. The others escaped into the water; but those on which the bladder was burst remained behind, for they had in their nature become land-cows. They were all the best cows, and there are still many cows of their kin around Dalir.

Í Breiðuvík við Borgarfjörð í Múlasýslu bjó maður, sem hèt Bjarni, er kallaður var Bjarni sterki. Eitt sumar bar svo við, að Bjarni var úti á túni í þykkmiklu veðri og þoku. Heyrir hann þá gripaferð út til sjávar fyrir neðan bæinn. Fer hann þá að horfa út í þokuna; sèr hann þá, að þar fer nautaflokkur, og ei færri en 18, og lítill piltur hleypur á eptir, en þar eptir fór kálfur. Bjarni hleypur á stað og í veg fyrir nautin; því hann þóktist vita, að það mundu vera sænaut. En þegar pilturinn sèr það, fer hann að herða á nautunum að hlaupa. Það sèr Bjarni, að uxi fer fyrst, og eru hríngar á hornum hans, og hrínglaði í, þegar hann fór að hlaupa. Hlupu svo hver í kapp við aðra, Bjarni og pilturinn, þartil kom í sjávarmál. Var þá Bjarni kominn á milli kálfsins og nautanna, og fór pilturinn með nautaflokkinn í sjóinn, en Bjarni sneri móti kálfinum, og barði framan á nasir honum, svo blaðran sprakk, sem sagt er, að sè milli nasanna á sænautunum, og komst hún þá ekki í sjóinn, og leiddi Bjarni hana heim til sín. Þetta hafði verið kvíga, og varð tuttugu-marka kýr, og út af henni var hið bezta kúakyn í Breiðuvík leingi fram eptir öldunum.
Vatn það, sem er í Haukadal vestra, er djúpt mjög, og ætla menn, að það hafi undirgaung við sjóinn. Þykjast menn opt heyra dunur í vatninu, og opt brýtur ís af því í frosti. Einu sinni í fyrndinni er mælt, að bóndinn á Vatnshorni hafi fyrir dag á útliðandi sumri komið í fjós sitt. Lèt hann það standa opið, ef kýr kynnu að koma heim. En er hann kom í fjósið, var það fult af 18 kúm, sægrám. Voru þær alveg eins og aðrar kýr, nema hvað blaðra var á nösum þeirra. Kýrnar ruddust út, en bóndi greip barefli, og tókst honum að spreingja blöðruna á 9 kúm. Sluppu hinar í vatnið; en þær, sem blaðran var spreingd á, urðu eptir, því þær voru í eðli sínu orðnar að landkúm. Þær voru allar beztu kýr, og eru enn margar kýr af kyni þeirra um Dali.
