Konan á Skúmsstöðum
At Skúmsstaðir in Landeyjar in Rangárvallasýsla, a farmer lived in former times; he had a handsome wife and many children. Once during wintertime in the twilight, he was out in the hay-yard, but his wife was inside cooking. Then a man comes to her, whom she had never seen before, and asks her to help his wife, who is in childbirth need. She excuses herself from this by all means, and says she has never attended a woman in labor. He presses her the harder on this, until the woman agrees that she shall go with him.
They walk then, until they come to a high hill. Then the hill opens up and the man walks in ahead; but the woman places her mittens on the hill above the doorway.
The man said she should be unafraid, and they then walk into the hill. When they have come inside, the woman sees nothing there except one bed and a woman in it; she was in heavy labor and had great contractions. The woman now passes her hands over her, and she is eased by that, so that she gives birth to the child shortly after. The woman received the child, and gives it all wrapping and nursing care as is customary.
When that was done, the farmer unlocks a certain small chest, takes a stone from it, and asks the midwife to rub it around the eyes of the child. The woman does not understand what this is supposed to mean, and thinks to herself that it can hardly bring her harm if she rubs the stone around one of her own eyes, and she does so, so that the farmer did not become aware of it. She then sees people walking about the hill and some sitting at work, but lets nothing of it be known. Then the hidden man accompanies her back to her home and thanks her for coming.
The following summer, the farmer from Skúmsstaðir went out to Eyrarbakki with his wares, and his wife was on the journey with him. He traded his wares at Eyrarbakki, then heads on the way home, and camps by the Þjórsá river near Egilsstaðir.
In the evening, when the caravan had settled down and everyone had gone to rest, the farmer's wife could not get to sleep, and when she has been awake for a while, she unfastens the tent flap and looks out. She then sees with the sighted eye a man coming to the flour sacks that the caravan men owned, untying them and taking his fistful out of each one, and putting it into a skin-bag that he carried under his arm.
And when he had nearly filled the bag, the woman said to him: "Why do you do this?"
He looks up at her with large eyes and said: "Why do you see me?"
He then blows on her, so that she felt it clearly. She saw him then no more, and no hidden man from then on.

Á Skúmsstöðum í Landeyum í Rángárvalla sýslu bjó forðum bóndi; hann átti konu ásjálega og mörg börn. Einhverju sinni um vetrartíma í rökkri var hann úti í heygarði, en kona hans inni við matseld. Kemur þá til hennar maður, er hún hafði aldrei fyrr sèð, og biður hana að hjálpa konu sinni, sem sè í barnsnauð. Hún telst undan því með öllu móti, og segist aldrei hafa verið hjá konu. Hann leitar því fastar á hana með þetta, þar til konan játar, að hún skuli með honum fara.
Gánga þau svo, þángað til þau koma að háum hól. Lýkst þá hóllinn upp og geingur maðurinn þar inn á undan; en konan leggur vetlínga sína á hólinn fyrir ofan dyrnar.
Maðurinn sagði, hún skyldi vera óhrædd, og gánga þau síðan inn í hólinn. Þegar þau eru inn komin, sèr konan þar ekkert, nema eitt rúm og konu í; hún hafði jóðsótt þúnga og hríðir miklar. Konan fer nú höndum um hana, og hægist henni við það, svo að hún elur barnið stuttu eptir. Konan tók við barninu, og veitir því alla umbúð og aðhjukrun, sem venja er til.
Að því búnu lýkur bóndi upp kistli einum, tekur þar úr stein og biður ljósuna að nudda honum um augu barnsins. Konan skilur eigi í, hvað þetta á að þýða, og hugsar með sèr, það geti þó varla orðið sèr að meini, þótt hún nuddi steininum um annað augað í sèr, og gerir hún svo, svo að bóndi varð þess eigi vísari. Sèr hún þá fólk á gángi um hólinn og sumt sitja að vinnu, en lætur eigi neitt á því bera. Síðan fylgir huldumaðurinn henni heim til sín og þakkar henni komuna.
Sumarið eptir fór bóndinn á Skúmsstöðum út á Eyrarbakka með vörur sínar, og var kona hans í för með honum. Hann verzlaði vörum sínum á Eyrarbakka, heldur síðan heim á leið, og liggur við Þjórsá hjá Egilsstöðum.
Um kvöldið, er lestin var lögzt, og allir komnir til náða, fèkk kona bónda ekki sofnað, og er hún hefir vakað um hríð, sprettir hún tjaldskörinni og lítur út. Sèr hún þá með hinu skygna auga mann koma að mjölsekkjunum, er lestamenn áttu, leysa frá þeim og taka sinn hnefa úr hverjum, og láta í belg, er hann bar undir hendinni.
Og er hann hafði þvínær fylt belginn, mælti konan til hans: „Því gerir þú þetta?“ Hann lítur upp á hana stórum augum og mælti: „Því sèr þú mig?“ Blæs hann þá á hana, svo að hún fann glögglega. Sá hún hann þá eigi framar, og eingan huldumann upp frá því.
