Once upon a time, Almighty God came to Adam and Eve. They welcomed him warmly and showed him everything they had in the house. They also showed him their children, and he thought they were all promising.
He asked Eve if they did not have more children than the ones she had already shown him. She said no.
But it so happened that Eve had not yet managed to wash some of the children, and she was reluctant to let God see them, and on that account, she hid them away.
God knew this, and said: “That which is meant to be hidden from me, shall be hidden from men.”
These children now became invisible to men, and they lived in rocky hills, heights, mounds, and stones. From there, the elves (álfar) are descended.
Men (humankind) are descended from those children of Eve that she showed to God. Mortal men can never see elves, unless the elves themselves wish it, for the elves can see men and allow men to see them.

(Tekið eptir almennri sögn í Borgarfirði, eptir Álfa-Árna.)
Einhverju sinni kom guð almáttugur til Adams og Evu. Fögnuðu þau honum vel, og sýndu honum alt, sem þau áttu innanstokks. Þau sýndu honum líka börnin sín, og þóktu honum þau allefnileg. Hann spurði Evu, hvort þau ættu ekki fleiri börn, en þau, sem hún var búin að sýna honum. Hún sagði nei. En svo stóð á, að Eva hafði ekki verið búin að þvo sumum börnunum, og fyrirvarað sig því, að láta guð sjá þau, og skaut þeim fyrir þá sök undan. Þetta vissi guð, og segir: „Það sem á að vera hulið fyrir mér, skal verða hulið fyrir mönnum.“ Þessi börn urðu nú mönnum ósýnileg, og bjuggu í holtum og hæðum, hólum og steinum. Þaðan eru álfar komnir, en mennirnir eru komnir af þeim börnum Evu, sem hún sýndi guði. Mennskir menn geta aldrei séð álfa, nema þeir vilji sjálfir; því þeir geta séð menn og látið menn sjá sig.
