Ormsbæli
Just east of the island of Papey lies a flat, rocky skerry known as Ormsbæli, or the Worm's Lair. According to local lore, this desolate outcrop was once the home of a fearsome worm that spent its days coiled atop a massive hoard of gold.
For ages, the beast lay undisturbed upon its treasure, until a bold Dutch sailor named Kumper arrived off the coast. Determined to claim the riches for himself, Kumper aimed his ship's cannons at the skerry and bombarded the lair, intending to drive the monster away and steal the gold.
History does not record just how much treasure Kumper actually managed to pillage, but his brutal assault did succeed in displacing the beast. The beast fled its ancient home, first seeking brief refuge at a nearby skerry called Ormssker, before swimming far inland to the deep waters of Hamarsfjörður.
Locals believe the beast took up permanent residence at the bottom of the fjord. Much like the famous worm of Lagarfljót or the legendary monster of Hvammsfjörður, the beast is now said to only surface as a dark omen, appearing just before major, world-altering events. Because of the lingering dread surrounding the creature, it has long been said that fishermen are too terrified to cast their nets in those haunted waters.

Flatt sker austanvert við Papey fyrir Suður-Múlasýslu heitir Ormsbæli. Það er í mæli, að þar hafi legið ormur á gulli eða dreki til forna, þángað til Hollendíngur einn, sem Kumper hèt, skaut á bælið með fallbyssum, til þess að hrekja orminn af gullinu og ná því sjálfur. Þess er ekki getið, hversu mikið gull Kumper fann í Ormsbæli, en hitt er sagt, að ormurinn hafi fyrst flúið til Ormsskers, og þaðan inn á Hamarsfjörð, og ætla menn, að hann hafi tekið sèr þar varanlegan bústað á firðinum, og komi í ljós fyrir stórtíðindum, eins og ormurinn í Lagarfljóti, og skrýmslið Hvammsfirði fyrir vestan, og því er sagt, að menn þori ekki að róa til fiskjar á hvorugum staðnum.
