The Quiet Corner

Time goes on while they wait for their families to come home

Today, Björn wears the bear hat Sveinn made for him. As usual, he walks to the postbox, checks the mail, goes to the sofa, and sits down. He has some penpals around the world. They send letters maybe once or twice a year to this small house, sharing pieces of their lives with each other.

Sveinn is at school today, so he is not at home. Björn wants to use the time to clean up the cats' room, and maybe go buy some food for dinner. But before he moves his body, he wants to read the letters.

The room is quiet. A grey cat is sleeping next to him. Today he got 3 letters, one for Sveinn and 2 for him. None of the letters are from their parents. Björn has gotten used to it. He is not sure if his parents are still alive.

Björn's parents and Sveinn's parents were friends; maybe they were relatives from a few generations ago. They lived close. Sometimes they brought the 2 kids together to the lake or mountain. In Björn's memory, they spent a lot of time in nature.

Björn's mamma was a warm person. She liked to bake and picnic under the sun. Björn's pappa was always energetic. He was full of ideas for having fun in nature. He feels so lucky that he was born into this family.

Sveinn also liked to stay with him at their home. Sveinn's parents didn't have time for him. They were hardworking; they worked for devils. Björn didn't know much about their job. But he seldom saw them at home. Every time they were away at work, Sveinn came to his room and stayed with him.

Björn's parents once told him to be friends with Sveinn; Sveinn was like his little brother. They played together, even though they fought sometimes. But that was just a small bump in their relationship.

However, the real accident happened. He remembers that day: his parents looked worried, even though they tried to look calm. They told Björn and Sveinn that they had to go on a long journey without them. This time, they were not going into the forest, not into nature. They had to complete a mission that they couldn't say much about.

Björn felt angry and helpless when he realized that his parents couldn't take him on the journey this time. He felt abandoned. He felt lonely; no one understood his feelings. Even when Sveinn was with him, he still felt so lonely.

Sveinn told Björn that their parents would all be fine. Sveinn's parents had left him when he was so little, so he spent a lot of time with Björn. Even though they are not with him, they send a letter to him monthly, so he doesn't worry too much about them.

But Björn couldn't get used to it. A strange feeling grew in Björn's heart. He had never seen his parents like this.

His parents left 70 or 80 years ago. At the beginning, they wrote letters back home regularly. Björn read their letters and felt calm. But the letters came fewer and fewer, and the waiting period became longer and longer. Björn feels the uncertainty. Waiting makes him suffer, but he can do nothing.

Björn hates waiting, the quiet moments when he feels disconnected from his parents. But he doesn't know where his parents live or what trouble they are in. He can't help them. He has lost his strength.

Time passes. During these decades, Björn has gotten a few letters from them. The last letter was maybe 5 years ago. Björn opens the letter. He reads quietly. He can feel their words. They are still his parents. They love him.

Björn puts all the letters into a box. He doesn't have as many letters as Sveinn, so every letter is a treasure. He keeps them safe.
